Where do I start?

Establish the position of your veggie box and where you want it located. From there, decide on the container. This is the fun part as it could be an old bath, stacked car tires, plastic pot, wooden container, or something else really fun. All you’ll need is full sun, soil, water, and your choice of herb or veggie. If you want to plant it directly into the ground, this will require more preparation of the soil. It will involve turning over the soil, introducing compost, kraal-manure, and ensuring a good dose of fertilizer. For a balcony or patio garden, nothing is more simple than using a container! Remember a good quality potting soil is essential in all your containers.

Plant What You Need!

There’s no point in planting artichokes or grenadilla in a little hanging basket. Look at what you want on your plate and what interests you in the kitchen. Caring for veggies and herbs like lettuce, peas, chives, spinach, parsley, coriander, rocket, and spring onion is a great way to go. Consider broad beans, peas, carrots, and radishes for the kids as these can be sown from using seeds with awesome results. Time for family fun in the garden!

One of the easiest ways to start is by using reusable plastic containers like these! If you’ve got some old tins from the kitchen those will work well too.
